TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona Men's Golf Team shot 287 (-1) in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship. The Cats are one of only three teams under par in a tournament featuring four of the top five, and 13 of the top 50 teams nationally. Tyler Neal finished day one in fifth place, one stroke behind a four-way tie for first.
Number four Clemson carded a 283 (-5) to walk away with the first round lead. Two strokes behind the Tigers is host UNLV. UNLV, who won the tournament last year, shot a 285 (-3). At one under, Arizona is two strokes out of second. Following the trend, two strokes behind the Cats is number 12 Georgia Tech at 289 (+1). The top team in the country Georgia shot a 303 (+13), putting them in a tie for 12th in the 15 team event. ASU is 26 strokes off the pace, and in 14th place.
There is a four way tie for first at 67 (-5). The top ranked golfer in the nation, Matthew Giles of USC, as well as Ben Martin of Clemson, Colby Smith of UNLV and Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech make up this tie. Tyler Neal blasted a 68 (-4) putting him in fifth.
Tyler Neal, who led Arizona with a second place finish in their last outing in the Braveheart Classic, once again led the Cats with his four under first round. Jonathan Khan joined Neal on the negative side of the scorecard with a 71 (-1), tying him for eighth. A third Wildcat finished day one in the top 20; Tarquin MacManus is tied for 17th. The final Arizona score counted was Rich Saferian's 75 (+3). Brad Nicholson is Brad Nicholson is tied for 52nd. Philip Bagdade, who is playing as an individual, is in 79th.
The second round begins tomorrow, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. PST. The Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship is contested at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev., a par 72, 7,510 yard course.
