Women's Tennis Edges SDSU in First Round of Regional

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona women's tennis team defeated the San Diego State Aztecs in the first round of Regional play 4-3. Arizona swept the doubles matches and won three of six singles matches for their 12th victory of the season.

In the No.1 singles spot, UA freshman Maja Mlakar, ranked No. 19, topped SDSU's 69th ranked Silvia Tornier, 6-4, 6-3. Wildcat sophomore Debbie Larocque, No. 59, edged SDSU's Lindsey Hedberg in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Arizona freshman Dianne Hollands, No. 106, tripped up SDSU's Katja Karrento in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles action, UA's No. 9 duo Mlakar and Larocque beat SDSU's Karrento and Katalina Romero, 8-3. Hollands and senior Brooke Taylor topped SDSU's Hedberg and Julie Anna Childley. The No. 2 doubles match did not finish as the outcome of the doubles point was already determined.

The Wildcats continue action tomorrow when they face the No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils at 10:00 a.m. ASU defeated Southwest Missouri State in their first round match, 4-0. Arizona and Arizona State have met twice with each school winning one match. ASU topped Arizona in Tempe 4-3 while Arizona defeated ASU 4-3 in Tucson.
