TUCSON -- The Arizona football team held its second major scrimmage of spring ball Saturday morning and enters the final week with coaches in good frames of mind after the offense seemed to regain some foothold against the defense.

That's from piling up more than 600 yards in the two-hour workout.

"It's good to see the offense do better sometimes," defensive coordinator Mark Stoops said afterward. "We had some guys in different positions and were experimenting, so I'd hope they could make big plays. But it's good for us, to force is to play better."

For his part, offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes had a similar message after his charges, notably led by Willie Tuitama's 426-yard passing day, put together some highlights. "We have to get a lot better, but I like what I see," Dykes said.

One thing they saw was Tuitama's final throw -- a 70-yard catch and run for a score by outside receiver Terrell Reese, who had five receptions for 123 yards and two scores.

"The scrimmage was better overall (than last week's) from an offensive perspective," head coach Mike Stoops said. "Receivers made bigger plays, vertically and horizontally. The pass protection was good all day."

"Defensively, we gave up too many big plays in the secondary, but it was a good day," he said. Brother Mark put it this way: "Overall, we're still happy. We like the effort and the way the whole team is trying to do the right things."

The Cats go back to work in practice a couple of times next week and then will close spring practice with the annual Spring Game in Arizona Stadium next Saturday.
