The No. 22 Arizona Wildcats completed the first day at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. today. The first day saw five Wildcats compete in singles action. Jay Goldman, Pat Metham, Ravid Hazi and Andres Carrasco all participated in the Championship Singles Flight. 

 

The Wildcats (17-5, 2-4) started out the day strong advancing three players to the second round of the, but the second round was unkind to Arizona as two of the three players lost.  

 

In the Championship Singles Flight, sophomore Jay Goldman made quick work of his first match of the day against Washington's David Chu. Goldman defeated Chu in straight sets winning 6-1, 6-3. Goldman advanced to play Matt Brooklyn of UCLA in the Round of 16.

 

In the second round against Brooklyn, Goldman fell in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

 

Metham defeated Marcos Verdasco of Oregon 6-1, 6-4. As a result, "Beast" had to face the number one seed in the Championship Singles Flight, Robert Farah of USC. Farah was too much for Metham as he defeated the New Zealand native 6-2, 6-3.  

 

Carrasco had to face California's Geoffrey Chizever in the first round of 32. Carrasco defeated Chizever 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. In his second match of the day, Carrasco had to face Holden Seguso of UCLA. He was able to hold off Seguso and win the match 6-4, 6-4. Carrasco advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Championship Singles Flight where he will face Stanford's Alex Clayton tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. 

 

In the Invitational Singles Round of 32, sophomore David Humphreys fell to Skyler P. Tateishi of Washington 6-2, 6-2. For Humphreys, it was his first match action since the fall.

 

Starting Friday, the Men's Championship Doubles Round of 16 begins with Jay Goldman and Pat Metham playing Derek Drabble and Martin Kildhal of Washington and Andres Carrasco and Ravid Hazi facing Blake Muller and Richard Wire of Stanford. Both matches will begin at 9:00 a.m.
