Tucson-- Freshman Deborah Castany defeated NMSU's Paulina Zuniga 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the New Mexico State Invitational in Las Cruces, NM over the weekend. On her way to the finals, Castany defeated NMSU's Natalia Salum 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the semis, UTEP's Ximena Fuentes 6-3, 6-0 in the quarters, and Tarleton State's Evgeniya Jaskova 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.
"This was a big feat for Deborah, going 4-0 in her first collegiate event," said head coach Vicky Maes. "She showed us she is a fighter, stepping up big time under pressure situations. I'm very happy with the way she handled herself throughout the entire tournament. She played challenging matches and needed to be strong mentally to win."
Also in singles, sophomore Jane Huh defeated NMSU's Stephanie Eusebe 6-1, 6-3 in the first round before losing to Oklahoma State's Nataliya Shatkovskaya 6-3, 6-3. Junior Ariane Masschelein defeated Oklahoma State's Maryna Trachenko 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a hard fought match but lost to NMSU's Sophia Marks 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 later that day.
In the consolation event, Masschelein beat UTEP's Weronika Bloczynska 6-3, 6-1 and Huh Tarleton's Natalia Yanes 6-4, 6-0 in their respective semifinal matches. They then faced each other in the finals, with Masschelein coming up with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 victory.
In doubles, Masschelein and Huh defeated Tarleton State's Chrissie Cooper and Natalia Yanes 8-1 in the first round. The duo then lost to Oklahoma State's Maryna Trachenko and Galina Semenova 8-3 in the semifinals. In a consolation match against NMSU's Stephanie Esuebe and Isabela Kulauf, Masschelein and Huh also lost 8-4.
"Overall, this was a good showing for the Wildcats, especially in the singles," Maes said, "We have a lot of work to do in doubles, but to see each player execute the game plan well and hit the ball with more confidence this early on in the year is a very good sign for things to come."
