TUCSON , Ariz. ?C ?University of Arizona menˇ?s basketball player Nic Wise had successful arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on damaged cartilage in his left knee.? He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Wise, a 5-foot-10, 178-pound sophomore guard from Houston, Texas, is averaging 8.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 22 games (six starts) this season. He is shooting 47.3 percent (61-of-1229) from the field to go with a tam-leading 41 steals. Heˇ?s scored in double figures nine times this season, including a career-high 17 points on Jan. 3 against Oregon State.

ˇ?Itˇ?s a tough break for Nic,ˇ± said Arizona interim head coach Kevin Oˇ?Neill.? ˇ?He was playing very well for us.? We hope to get him healthy as quickly as possible. Someone is going to have to step up and perform in his absence.ˇ±

Wise currently leads the Pac-10 Conference with a 1.86 steals per game average.? He also ranks second in three-point field goal percentage (.491/27-of-55), fourth with a 2.02 assist:turnover ratio, and ninth in assists.? Wise was averaging 28.0 minutes per game.

Wise is believed to have injured his left knee on Jan. 31 in an 80-69 win at USC in which he tallied nine points, two rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes played.? He did see action in Arizonaˇ?s Feb. 2 game at UCLA and totaled 12 points, two rebounds and four steals in 32 minutes.

Arizona (15-7, 5-4 Pac-10) will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 10, when the team hosts Arizona State. The game is scheduled to tip off at 12:30 p.m. MST and can be seen nationally on Fox Sports Net.
