Freshman Travis Esway captures individual medalist honors in debut collegiate event
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona’s men’s golf junior varsity team needed a sudden death playoff to complete its comeback and win the Ron Moore Invitational Tuesday evening in Brighton, Colo.
The Wildcats shot a five-under-par 283 in Tuesday’s final round to post a three-round total of 862 (-2) and tie the University of Hawaii after 54 holes. Arizona claimed victory on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Southern Utah (864), Towson (868) and Nebraska (870) rounded out the top five places in the 10-team field.
The victory was the first for the UA junior varsity against varsity competition, since winning the 49er Collegiate Classic, Oct. 30- Nov. 1, 2002.
Wildcat freshman Travis Esway captured individual medalist honors in his first collegiate event. The Granite Bay, Calif., product blistered the field with a three-round 204 (-12) total and won the event by three strokes. Esway was under par in all three rounds, including an opening-round 66 and a closing 68.
Esway joins Ricky Barnes (2000), Chris Nallen (2001) and Henry Liaw (2004) as the only Arizona freshmen to win events during their freshman seasons in the last six years. Esway is the only one of the group to win an event during fall competition.
Two other Arizona freshman posted strong debuts at the tournament. Trey Denton, a native of Canton, Miss., collected his first career top-10 finish in tying for eighth place with a 54-hole total of 214 (-2), including an opening-round 68. Tyler Neal, a Tucson native, tied for 43rd place with a 223 (+7) tally.
Also competing for the Wildcats were sophomores Ben Marsh and Brian Prouty. Marsh tied for 43rd place with a 223 (+7) total, while Prouty tied for 66th place at 229 (+13).
The Ron Moore Invitational was contested at Riverdale Dunes Golf Course, a par 72, 7,129-yard layout.
The Arizona varsity golf team will next be in action, Oct. 1-2, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
