TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona women’s basketball head coach Joan Bonvicini today announced the signing of two-time Washington Gatorade and Seattle Times Player of the Year Malia O’Neal to a National Letter of Intent.
"I am very excited about the addition of Malia to our 2005 recruiting class," Bonvicini said. "She is the final piece of what I consider a great class. Malia is a consummate point guard- a leader on the court who will make everyone around her better. We are very fortunate to get a player of Malia’s caliber and skill-set so late in the recruiting game. She will have an immediate impact on our team. Because of her heart, hustle, and amazing passing and ball handling abilities, she will be an instant fan favorite."
O’Neal, a 5-5 point guard who led her Garfield High School team to the state title this year for the first time since 1987, averaged 17.4 points on 52 percent shooting, to go along with 8.2 assists and 6.2 steals as a senior. During her junior campaign, the team was the state runner-up.
