TUCSON - Northern Iowa (8-5) beat New Mexico State 9-5 in a game marred by 12 errors in second-day action at Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament

More than half the runs in the game were unearned, due to six errors by New Mexico State (2-19) and six by UNI. The Panthers won their first game in the tournament (1-2) and will likely play in the third-place game Sunday. NMSU finished 0-4 and was eliminated.

NMSU took a 1-0 lead with a single by Christine Stevens to lead off the second. She stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, and later scored on a single by Jennifer Bride. Northern Iowa took the lead with five runs in the top of the third, four of them unearned because of two errors by NMSU. Melissa King hit a solo home run to cap the rally.

New Mexico State took advantage of three Northern Iowa errors in the bottom of the fourth to score a couple of runs and trim lead to 5-3. In the fifth, Jasmine Flores led off the NMSU half with a triple, scored on a sacrifice fly by Breana Bohls, then Stevens homered to center to tie the game.

Tanya Miller's two-run home run in the sixth gave UNI the lead again, 7-5. The fifth NMSU error made one of the runs unearned. Then a walk and another error led to two more runs for a 9-5 lead.
