LOS ANGELES ?- The Arizona baseball team swept its first Pac-10 road series since 1999 with a 12-2 win over UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday. The victory improved the Wildcats to 21-10 overall and to 5-1 in the conference. UCLA lost its 13th straight game and fell to 7-17 overall and to 0-3 in the Pac-10.

After three straight weeks in which the Arizona pitching staff has struggled in a series finale, freshman Eric Berger impressed on Sunday. The southpaw retired the first 12 straight hitters he faced in relief of starter David Coulon, did not give up a hit and was just an eighth inning walk and a wild pitch on a third strike in the ninth shy of tossing a perfect final 5 2/3 innings the game.

Berger (3-0) struck out six for his third win of the year, while UCLA’s Brian Schroeder (0-2) was charged with his second loss of the season after surrendering five runs on eight hits in five innings on the mound.

Offensively, Arizona rapped out 12 runs on 16 hits, including four doubles and a home run. Leadoff hitter Trevor Crowe finished the contest 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Senior Jeff Van Houten went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored while junior Jordan Brown (3 for 5, 2B, R) improved his career RBI total against UCLA to 25 with three runs driven in on Sunday

The Wildcats will have Monday off before taking on the Tucson Sidewinders in an exhibition game at TEP on Tuesday. Arizona will return to Pac-10 action next Friday at Washington State in Pullman, Wash., in the opening game of a three-game series. The entire series against the Cougars can be heard live on the radio on 1290 AM The Source.

In 10 relief appearances this season Eric Berger is 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings. In three starts he is 0-0 with a 13.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts in nine innings pitched ... Sophomore Jason Donald was hit by his Pac-10 leading 14th pitch of the year. He is just one shy of equaling Kenny Corley’s single season record of 15 ... Brad Boyer hit his second home run of the season in the win on Sunday... Arizona batted .357 as team with 10 doubles and three home runs in the series ... The pitching staff posted a 3-0 record with a 2.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts against just nine walks in 27 innings pitched ... The Wildcats outscored UCLA 31 to 6 in the series.
