TUCSON - Top-ranked Arizona made the most of a school-night modest hitting attack and used a two-hitter by Alicia Hollowell to beat rival Arizona State, 3-1, Wednesday night before a crowd of 1,622 at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The victory kept UA at least three in front in the Pac-10 at 10-1 and improved the club to 46-2 overall. ASU dropped to 1-10 and 31-24. The victory also gave UA a season three-game sweep over the Sun Devils.

Caitlin Lowe's speed helped UA take a quick lead in the first. She led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single into short right field by Wendy Allen. ASU pitcher Bre De Santa pitched herself into a jam by walking Mackenzie Vandergeest and Jackie Coburn to load the bases, and Allyson Von Liechtenstein singled through the right side to drive in Allen and make it 2-0.

ASU All-American third baseman Phelan Wright cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second with a leadoff home run off UA starter Alicia Hollowell, getting the ball up in the wind blowing out toward left.

Lowe walked and scored from second on another Allen single in the second inning to make it 3-1, again beating a throw to the plate. It was Allen's 67th RBI of the year, and kept her on pace to match current Olympian Lovie Jung's 79 RBI for Arizona a year ago.

The Cats stranded eight runners, collecting eight hits and three walks off De Santa (9-10) and reliever Desiree Serrano. ASU managed only a single by Sharee Zaleski off Hollowell (33-1) in the third inning to go with Wright's home run. Hollowell struck out nine to push her UA season-record and NCAA-leading total to 409. Her 33 victories are tied for the sixth most in UA history.

Rightfielder Crystal Farley was 3-for-3 for the Cats while Lowe scored the pair of runs and stole two bases to help lead Arizona.

UA will play host to the California Golden Bears at 7 p.m. Friday and the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday and Sunday. The Sun Devils will play Stanford at home in Tempe Friday and a pair of games over the weekend against Cal.
