Arizona Women's Tennis Advances Three Singles Players, One Doubles Team to Third Round at Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas - The Wildcat women's tennis team completed the first day of main-draw singles and doubles play Friday at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. Junior Maja Mlakar advanced to the third round of play in the gold bracket main-draw action, and senior Debbie Larocque and junior Dianne Hollands advanced to the third round in the green bracket main-draw play. Sophomore Iza Ferreira won her first round match, but lost in the second round. Junior Kelly Perry and freshman Kasia Jakowlew lost in first round action.

Mlakar received a first round bye and went on to the second round to defeat Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Mlakar will face Mississippi State's Anastasia Kugakulova in the third round of action.

Hollands also received a first round bye. Advancing to the second round, Hollands defeated Mississippi State's Marcelle Hirt, 6-3, 6-3. Hollands will compete against Baylor's Stephanie Balzert in the third round.

Larocque was the third Wildcat to receive a first round bye and win to advance to the third round. Larocque will advance thanks to a second round win over Kentucky's Danielle Petrisko, 6-1, 6-0. Her third round opponent will be Auburn's Petra Bercik.

Ferreira did receive a first round bye, but was defeated in the second round of action by Mississippi State's Anastasia Kugakulova 6-2, 7-6.

Kelly Perry lost in the first round, but won in consolation play over Paige Evans 2-6, 7-5, 7-6.

In the Green main draw doubles bracket the team of Hollands and Mlakar received a first round bye and went on to defeat SMU's Kit Carson and Svetlana Kouzmenko, 8-2. The two will compete in third round action against Texas's Ristine Olson and Katie Ruckert.

Also competing in the green doubles bracket the team of Jakowlew and Larocque won in the first round 9-7 over Mississippi States Hayley Rudman and Yumi Ueda, but lost in second round action.

The doubles teams of Ferreira with Rochefort, and Duncan with Perry both lost in the first round of the gold main draw bracket.

The Arizona women's tennis team will continue play at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas on Sept. 20, 2003.
