CYPRESS, Calif.ˇ?University of Arizona senior linebacker Spencer Larsen was named one of the initial recipients of the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.

?

The league partnered with Toyo Tire Corp. this year to establish awards to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline. A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-10ˇ? 22 sponsored sports.

?

Those include football, baseball, softball, womenˇ?s gymnastics, wrestling, womenˇ?s volleyball, and menˇ?s and womenˇ?s programs in basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, track and field, tennis and swimming and diving.

?

Each Pac-10 institution nominates an individual per sport, basically from its Academic All-Pac-10 honorees ?C Larsen was a first-team selection a few weeks ago -- and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-10 staff members at the conclusion of each sportˇ?s regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.

?

Larsen was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection at linebacker for Arizona, a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy given for outstanding scholastic and citizenship among national football players, and earned second-team All-America honors from Rivals.com. ?He is a two-time first-team all-conference academic selection and was a second-team pick in 2005.

?

He led the league with 131 tackles and completed his four-year career at Arizona ?C which was extended from 2002 to 2007 by a two-year Mormon mission to Chile ?C with 312 tackles. He also led the team this year with 15.5 tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.

?

ˇ?Toyo is proud to support the Pac-10 and to acknowledge outstanding student-athletes for their efforts,ˇ± said Steve Hutchinson, senior director of marketing, Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corp. ˇ?By supporting todayˇ?ss achievers, we feel we are helping to grow tomorrowˇ?s leaders.ˇ±

?

?

Other Arizona nominees for the awards were Kaity Jo Heath of the womenˇ?s soccer program, Angelina Cabrera of womenˇ?s cross country and Dominique Lamb of womenˇ?s volleyball.
