STARKVILLE, Miss. ?- Arizona senior center fielder Caitlin Lowe and junior pitcher Taryne Mowatt were named to the NFCA All-America teams, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

Caitlin Lowe
Lowe was named to the first team and Mowatt to the second team.  While both Lowe and Mowatt have enjoyed exceptional seasons, both honors have historical implications as well.

Lowe is now the second player in Arizona softball history to be named to a first-team All-American all four years she played and just the fifth Wildcat to make the All-America squad for four years.  Leah Braatz is Arizona’s only other four-time, first-team All-American and former Wildcat greats Alicia Hollowell, Lauren Bauer and Amy Chellevold are the other four-timers.

The center fielder from Tustin, Calif., has set a school record with 156 stolen bases in a career and will enter the Women’s College World Series with a .425 batting average, 49 stolen bases and 55 runs scored in 2007.

Lowe is one of just 12 players in NCAA Division I Softball history to have accumulated 300 hits, 200 runs scored and 100 stolen bases.  Additionally, her .448 career batting average is good for second in school history and puts her in the top 10 in NCAA history.

On Tuesday, Lowe was named the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winner ?- an honor bestowed for the first time on a softball player ?- for on and off-field achievement.

Taryne Mowatt
This is Mowatt’s first All-America honor and marks the 17th consecutive year that an Arizona pitcher has been named an All-American.

The pitcher from Corona, Calif., has had to fill the shoes of a four-time All-American in Hollowell and has done so to the tune of a 36-10 record with a 1.65 ERA with 446 strikeouts in 310 innings pitched.

Her win total is the tied for the third highest in a season for an Arizona pitcher, she has pitched more innings than any other Wildcat in a given year and will have struck out the second-most batters in a season when she registers her first punchout in the world series.

Lowe and Mowatt’s citations mark the 18th consecutive year that Arizona has had at least two players named to the All-America team.  Incidentally, this week the Wildcats are making their 19th trip to the Women’s College World Series in the last 20 years.

Arizona (44-12-1) begins WCWS on Thursday in Oklahoma City against eighth-seeded Baylor (50-14).  The game is slated for 8 p.m. (CDT) and will be shown live to a national audience on ESPN.
