NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

In a match where the Arizona women’s tennis team had to fight through adversity, the Wildcats fell to No. 23 Alabama, 4-1 at the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Nashville, Tenn. Arizona had to play without key singles and doubles player Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium).

“We knew this was going to be challenging without Kim, but we were still confident we could win,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “I felt that we had plenty of opportunities at both Nos. 4 and 5, but didn’t play tough enough to pull it out.”

Despite the loss, the Wildcats showed some positive signs as senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) earned a win in straight sets over Alabama’s Alex Clay.

Senior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) fell to No. 13 Mary Anne Macfarlane, sophomore Susan McRann (Dublin, Ireland) to Taylor Lindsey and freshman Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) to Antonia Foehse.

Senior Sarah Landsman (Syosset, N.Y.) was up 5-3 in the third set of an unfinished match against No. 43 Alexa Guarachi.

“Overall, this was an extremely valuable weekend for us,” Maes said. “We really had these teams worried and we showed that we can compete at that level. We will take this experience into our future matches and be a better team because of it.”

Arizona will return to Robson Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a dual match against San Diego at 10 a.m.
