Sibenik, Croatia (Aug. 3) - University of Arizona women's basketball player Shawntinice Polk scored 14 points to help the USA Young Women (7-1) to a 71-55 gold medal victory over Brazil (6-2) at the 2003 FIBA World Championship for Young Women in Sibenik, Croatia, on Sunday.

Shooting 7-for-10 from the floor, Polk was the second-leading scorer in the contest, behind LSU's Seimone Augustus, who put up a game-high 18 points. Polk also had five rebounds and a pair of steals while playing 26 minutes in the game.

Georgia's Christi Thomas contributed 13 points and a game-high-tying eight rebounds, while Duke's Alana Beard had 12 points. Augustus was named the Tournament MVP, while Beard and Thomas were both selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The U.S. team's victory avenged its only loss in the preliminary rounds, a 73-60 defeat by Brazil on July 27.
