Broni, Italy ?- The University of Arizona women’s basketball team opened its tour of Italy with an 82-46 win over Cantina Sociale Di Broni on Tuesday night.  The Wildcats overcame a 10 point first quarter deficit to run away with a blowout win.

Individually for Arizona, sophomore Amina Njonkou lead the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Ashley Whisonant finished with 23 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Malia O’Neal added eight points, seven rebounds and six assists, and junior Suzy Bofia tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.

Jet lag seemed to plague the Wildcats in the opening minutes of the game, as Broni took advantage of UA’s cold shooting to race out to an early double-figures lead.  Arizona trailed 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Arizona woke up in the second quarter, out-scoring Broni 22-6 for a 35-29 halftime lead.  The Wildcats continued their dominant play after the half by using a 27-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter for a 62-33 lead heading in the fourth.

Freshman Rhaya Neabors finished with four points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, and freshman Marie McGee had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.  Senior Shannon Hobson pulled down four rebounds for the Wildcats.

Arizona played its first game under international rules.  The Wildcats played four 10 minute quarters with a 24 second shot clock, and eight seconds to advance the ball past half court.

The Wildcats will play their second game in Italy on Wednesday, May 16 in Jesolo.
