TUCSON - Junior Melissa Layton came within one block of a triple-double, leading No. 11 Brigham Young to a come-from-behind, five-game victory over 19th-ranked Arizona in Tucson Tuesday night, 15-12, 13-15, 3-15, 15-6, 15-5.
BYU improved to 17-3 with the win, while Arizona fell to 12-8 with its third consecutive loss. This is the first time the Cats have dropped three straight matches since losing four in a row from Oct. 6-19, 1996.
UA lost its second consecutive contest in five games. Arizona had gone 16-2 in its last 18 five-game matches prior to Friday's loss to UCLA.
Layton posted 13 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks and was one of five Cougars in double figures in kills. Senior Caroline Bower had 11 kills and 27 digs.
Senior Raelene Elam posted 15 kills and 15 digs for the Cats to go along with a team-season-best four aces. Sophomore Dana Burkholder recorded 54 assists and 17 digs.
Arizona returns to action Saturday when it travels to Tempe to take on Arizona State (10-8) at 7 p.m.
