TUCSON, Ariz. -

Arizona Women’s Tennis opened its spring season on Saturday with a victory over No. 63 UC Santa Barbara. The Wildcats defeated the Gauchos, 6-1.

Arizona took advantage of a special opportunity, playing in front of a crowd of more than 200 people at the Tucson Country Club.

"I was really pleased with the way the team battled today," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "We didn't play our best, but we did do a good job of finding ways to win on each court."

The Wildcats started the match strong, won the doubles point and all three doubles matches as senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) and sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) won at the No. 1 spot, senior Sarah Landsman (Syosset, N.Y.) and freshman Hailey Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) won at the No. 2 spot and sophomores Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and Susan McRann (Dublin, Ireland) won at the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, five Wildcats earned wins on the day. Landsman finished first in a rout of UCSB’s Paola Cos at No. 4 and Stubbe was not far behind in her win over Natalia Lozano at No. 2.

At No. 1 singles, Smyth defeated Sofia Novak, while Marks earned a win over Kiersten Meehan at No. 3.

Freshman Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) wrapped up action for the day with a win over Jordon Dockendorf for her first win as a Wildcat at No. 6.

"This win certainly gives us a good idea of our team's ability," Maes said. "I feel confident we will have a great showinng next week against two top teams."

Arizona will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on No. 15 Vanderbilt on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. MST.
