The Arizona softball team finished the season ranked No. 4 in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll and No. 5 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball poll after its 45-12 season and ninth Pac-10 Championship.

Arizona has been ranked steadily in the oldest poll, the NFCA's, since 1989, and in the USA Softball poll since its inception five years ago.

Michigan completed its dream season by winning its first NCAA Women’s College World Series and sitting atop the final polls. UCLA's late season charge and run through the postseason to the title game in Oklahoma City gave it the No. 2 spots in the polls. Tennessee moved way up after its WCWS trip and was No. 3, while another team that helped oust Arizona in Oklahoma City, Texas, finished fourth in the USA poll and fifth behind UA in the NFCA poll.

The Pac-10 had seven teams in the NFCA poll and six in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. The Big 12 had six teams in the latter.

Arizona played a number of teams in the final rankings in 2005 -- the six Pac-10 teams plus Michigan, Oklahoma, Baylor, Fresno State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas and Tennessee. UA had a 20-11 mark against those clubs and suffered its only loss to a non-ranked team against Oregon, which later finished No. 23 in the NFCA poll after its NCAA appearance. All eight Pac-10 teams played in the post season tournament.

Michigan's title was the first for a team in the Eastern Time Zone after decades-long domination by the Pac-10 and other western schools. In the 24-year history of Division I softball since it began play in 1982 only eight different teams have won national championships -- UCLA (10), Arizona (6), Texas A&M (2), Cal State Fullerton (1), Fresno State (1), Oklahoma (1), California (1) and Michigan (1). UCLA's 1995 victory over Arizona in the title game, 4-2, later was vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions and no winner was declared.
