TUCSON, Ariz.- Head baseball coach Andy Lopez's first recruiting class at Arizona has gained the attention of the national media. Collegiate Baseball newspaper named Arizona's 2001-02 recruiting class the 10th-best in Division I. The publication ranks schools on the talent of the recruits that actually show up to play on campus after classes start for each respective school.

Coach Lopez and recruiting coordinator Mark Wasikowski are no strangers to top recruiting classes. While at Florida, their 1999 class was ranked second in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.

Arizona's 2001-02 recruiting class consists of 13 freshmen, including a pair of MLB draftees, seven junior college players and Georgia Tech transfer Kevin Guyette.

Arizona joins fellow Pac-10 schools UCLA (seventh) and Stanford (ninth) in the top 10. Other conference schools in the top 30 are USC (12th), Arizona State (14th) and Oregon State (29th).

Georgia Tech was named the school with the top recruiting class in the nation this season. The Yellow Jackets signed nine freshmen players, including four who were drafted in June, but opted to play collegiately instead.

The Wildcats were set to open their fall schedule on Monday, Oct. 7, but that date has been pushed back a week. Fall practices will now begin Monday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. Walk-on tryouts will be held that same day beginning at 5 p.m.
