TUCSON, Ariz. - Bolstered by solid play from the top of its lineup, the University of Arizona men's golf team defeated 19th-ranked Texas Tech, 3-1-1, Tuesday at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Course at Dove Mountain.
The 14th-seeded Wildcats got two wins and a halve from its top three golfers en route to the win in the consolation bracket semifinals. It was Arizona's second straight victory in the four-round event.
Arizona faces 16th-seed Indiana in Tuesday's consolation bracket final. The Hoosiers defeated UCLA, 3-2, on Monday. Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. PDT.
Once again, it was Rich Saferian who led the way for Arizona, as he posted a 3 and 2 win over Texas Tech's Matt Smith. A senior from Wixom, Mich., Saferian opened a two-hole lead with birdies on holes 13 and 15, his second and fourth holes of the day, and extended his lead with pars on holes one and three. He closed the match with a par-4 on the ninth hole. He is a spotless 3-0 in this event.
Senior Tarquin MacManus earned UA's first point of the day with a 4 and 3 defeat of TTU's Nils Floren. MacManus, a native of Cairns, Queensland, Australia, won his first hole of the day with a par and retook the lead for good with a par-3 on hole 3, his ninth of the day. He won three of his last six holes and clinched the match with a par-4 on the ninth hole.
Freshman Trent Redfern earned the decisive point of the day with a 3 and 1 win over Texas Tech's Brian Scherer. A native of Austin, Texas, Redfern and his opponent were all square through nine holes before he took control with pars on his 10th and 15th holes of the day. Redfern capped the match with a birdie-3 on hole 10 to send the Wildcats into the consolation final.
Arizona's Jonathan Khan earned an impressive halve in his match with Chris Ward with a birdie-2 on hole 12, the final hole of the day. The Tucson, Ariz., product actually was 4-down with as few as five holes to play and won four of those holes - all with birdies - to earn a halve.
The 2010 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship is a 16-team tournament featuring the finest teams in college golf. The four-round event concludes Tuesday at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Ritz-Carlton Golf Course at Dove Mountain, a par 72, 7,833-yard layout.
This is the same facility and layout (Saguaro and Tortolita nines) that hosts the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Championships in February.
