TUCSON - NCAA Region 1 Softball - Tucson

Game 5 - Temple 3, UC-Santa Barbara 0

Freshman pitcher Richelle Villescas tossed a one-hit shutout to help Temple beat UC-Santa Barbara Friday night and stay alive in the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships. The Gauchos (32-31) were eliminated.

Temple took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning with run-scoring singles by Adrienne Repsher and Alexis Gary, and a fielder's choice RBI by Laura Gutscher. Two of the runs were earned.

Villescas (18-13) tossed a one-hit shutout over Villanova March 28, but had allowed no less than three in any complete game start this year. She took the loss earlier in the day to Oklahoma, 5-0.

UCSB got its first hit in the bottom of the fifth. Karyna Wilkerson doubled to left. The Owls, meantime managed only six hits off UCSB's Lindsey Sommer (6-10).

The Owls (30-17) will play the loser of the 2 p.m. Friday game between Arizona and Louisiana-Lafayette in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Temple Coach Rocci Pignoli - "This freshman pitcher of ours didn't have anything tonight, but she hung in there. Our defense played solid, and we got a few good hits. I am really proud of the team. We had some timely hitting when we needed it. It was good solid play all around."

Pitcher Richelle Villescas - "I felt that I didn't do my personal best, but I had the defense behind me the whole game. I knew that I couldn't change anything because it was working for me. But if I did, I knew that I had my team behind me."

UCSB Coach Kristy Schroeder - "We didn't hit the ball. We scored one run in our two games. Lindsey (Sommer) pitched well enough to win. We weren't real sharp. Tonight, we were rusty. We usually don't make errors towards the end of the season, but when you do, this is what happens."

Game 3 - Louisiana-Lafayette 1, South Carolina 0

Brooke Mitchell of Louisiana-Lafayette and Stacey Johnson of South Carolina engaged in a pitcher's duel for six innings before Mitchell got enough help from her teammates to post a 1-0 victory in first-round action at the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Holly Tankersley drew and walk and scored on a double to left-center by Danyele Gomez in the top of the seventh for the only run.

UL improved to 56-6 overall and will meet the Arizona-Centenary winner in the second round at 2 p.m. Friday. South Carolina dropped to 27-23 and plays the UA-CC game's loser in an earlier elimination game at 9 a.m.

UL stranded two runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth. Ashley Joy and Joy Webre singled with one out and moved up on a ground-out, but Johnson struck out pinch-hitter Leslie Pierce for the third out.

Mitchell tossed a one-hitter, struck out eight and improved to 42-3. The Ragin' Cajuns tagged Johnson for seven hits, but stranded seven runners before Gomez' marker. Johnson's record fell to 16-13.

Louisiana Lafayette Head Coach Stefni Lotief - "Obviously, it was a team effort. It took a while for us to get going. The first game is always good to get under your belt."

"Once you're here, you're here. We would have liked a better seeding, but it wasn't under our control. Our mindset is to come here and compete. We'll roll with it from here and take what we can get."

"With Brooke (Mitchell) on the mound, we can beat anyone in the country. Our hitters have grown up since our last meeting with Arizona."

"I think Mitchell went out there aggressively. She worked on her pitches. She did a good job mixing it up. We would have liked better leadoff at-bats, but I never count this team out."

Pitcher Brooke Mitchell - "It worked out for us. We just went one pitch at a time. We knew that we were going to get it done."

Third Baseman Danyele Gomez - "It was a good situation for me to have one person on base and a chance to score. I didn't know if it would drop, but when I saw Holly (Tankersley) running, I knew we'd score."

South Carolina Head Coach Joyce Compton - "I thought Stacey (Johnson) pitched well enough to win. Even so, our lackadaisical offense was tentative. We didn't look like we wanted to be swinging our bats today."

"If we get one hit, we're not going to win. There is a lot of pressure on every ball. Anything can be the game-winner."

Pitcher Stacey Johnson - "I felt that I threw well today, especially over the last part of our season. This is my last season, and I want to play well."

Game 2 - Oklahoma 5, Temple 0

Oklahoma pitchers Kami Keiter and Jessica Johnson combined for a one-hit 5-0 shutout over Temple (9-17) and keep the Sooners in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships at Hillenbrand Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Oklahoma (41-19-1) took the lead in the bottom of the second. Christina Enea and Jamie Fox singled. Mariee Mena hit a soft liner to left that got past a diving Lynsey Grace for an RBI double. Kami Keiter hit a ground ball to first and Fox beat a throw to the plate for a second run. April Valdez hit a sacrifice bunt and was safe at first when Mena beat a throw to the plate. Keiter scored when scored when Valdez stole second and the throw sailed past the base.

OU picked up an unearned run with a two-out RBI single by Mena in the third. Keiter pitched six innings and Johnson set down the opposition in order in the seventh.

OU will face Northwestern Friday morning. Temple plays an elimination game at 7 p.m.

Oklahoma Head Coach Patty Gasso - "It's a win, which is very important to us. The first one is the toughest to get. Everyone seemed a little tight, but Kami (Keiter) had complete control of the game."

"Offensively, we executed well. We tried to force the issue offensively. We are a better hitting team that we showed. We need to be glad to make contact however it happens."

"We are sticking together. Anyone could come out of the game at anytime. We will deal with this and keep dealing with it as far as we can go."

Oklahoma Pitcher Kami Keiter - "They (Temple) are really aggressive. I just tried to have good ball movement. I wanted to have them hit the ball to the infield because our defense is awesome."

Temple Head Coach Rocco Pignoli - "I was really proud of both of our pitchers. They were solid on the mound. We didn't play our game today. We were playing scared. They weren't hitting really hard, but we didn't play our defense."

"We are resilient. We got the nervousness out, and we will come back strong tonight."

Shortstop Aida Esquer - "Basically, we weren't going for our pitch. We were scared and timid. We weren't able to adjust to the Oklahoma pitching." BOX SCORE

Game 1 - Northwestern 8, UC-Santa Barbara 1

NCAA Region 1 Softball - Tucson

Northwestern (33-18) used an 11-hit attack to trounce UC-Santa Barbara 8-1 in first-round action at the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships Thursday morning. NU will play the Temple-Oklahoma winner and UCSB will play the loser of that second game at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Garland Cooper hit a two-out single in the bottom of the first for Northwestern, and scored on a double by Kristen Amegin to give NU a 1-0 lead.

The Gauchos (32-30) tied it in the top of the third with an unearned run. WIth two outs, Kendra Singley singled and two walks put her at third, then she scored on a ground ball mishandled by Amegin at third base.

Amegin walked in the bottom of the third, Eryn Manahan reached on a fielder's choice, then both scored on a two-run double by J.C. Kira to regain the lead for Northwestern.

Northwestern loaded the bases to chase Davis in the fourth with consecutive singles by Katie Logan, Carri Leto and Erin Mobley. Cooper drew a walk to make it 4-1. Amegin drove in another run with a single and Eryn Manahan hit a sacrifice fly to push it to 6-1. Mobley and Cooper hit back-to-back home runs to open the WIldcats' sixth and extend the lead to 8-1.

Courtney Foster (15-14) limited the Gauchos to four hits. Jennifer Davis (16-16) took the loss for UCSB.

Northwestern Head Coach Kate Drohan - "I am very pleased with the way our team came out and scored in the first inning. It set the tone for the rest of the game. The way we got out of the first inning was impressive."

"I am also very pleased with (Courtnay) Foster's performance. She looked really good, especially in several clutch situations. Our whole team looked good today."

NU pitcher Courtnay Foster - "It was nice to have family. It was nice to have friends around. It was nice to have over-40 degree weather."

"It was huge for us to score early, especially with two outs. Our team did a great job not letting up and keeping the pressure on the whole game."

UCSB Head Coach Kristy Schroeder - "It hurt us that we weren't able to score in the first inning. Our lineup not coming through brought us down. We played frightened at the beginning. We had to play catch-up all day. It was probably first-game jitters, and it was the first time for all of these girls to be here."

Outfielder Leslie Simien - "When our hitters and pitchers are on, no one can hit us. We just need to go back to the way we were playing during conference season and know that we can win."
