TUCSON, Ariz. – Just four days after winning its Pac-12 opener at home against Arizona State, the Arizona volleyball team returns to the McKale Center for a 5 p.m. matchup against No. 5 Washington on Saturday.
The Wildcats enter Saturday’s contest with a 9-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Pac-12 play after defeating the rival Sun Devils, 3-1, on Tuesday. The match was the first for UA on the new Pac-12 Networks.
Sophomore Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) was phenomenal against ASU as she recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the season and third 20-plus kill performance. Kingdon recorded 20 kills, 11 digs and four blocks in the victory. She was especially clutch in the fourth-set as she tallied eight kills and five digs. Meanwhile, libero Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded a match-high 21 digs, which was also her season-high.
The Cats were solid on the defensive end as they held ASU to just a .107 hitting percentage, while also doubling up the Sun Devils in the blocking category, 14-7.
Meanwhile, No. 5 Washington heads to Tucson with an unblemished record so far this season. The Huskies are 10-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-12 after defeating Washington State in four-sets on Tuesday.
The Huskies are extremely efficient as they enter Saturday’s match with the fewest attack errors in the league, while hitting a solid .321 as a team – good enough for second in the Pac-12. UW leads the league in service aces at 1.65 per set and rank second in blocks at 3.13 per set.
Washington has owned the series between the two schools as of late. The Huskies have defeated the Wildcats in 15 of the last 16 meetings. UW leads the all-time series 30-25. The last time Arizona earned a victory against Washington was on November 20, 2010 in Tucson.
The Wildcats continue their 10-match homestand on Friday, September 28 when they host No. 6 Stanford at 7 p.m. inside the McKale Center.
