Senior Women's Tennis Player Natasha Marks -
Another exciting weekend at Robson tennis center and the tennis cats took on rival team University of San Diego (USD) ranked No. 35 after suffering an away defeat last year.
The week commencing we knew that this was a key match... well a must win really. After an exhausting weekend in Tennessee a few of the girls took two days off to recover and then we went right back into training. With a lot of individual success against the USD Toreros, we matched up really well and knew their game styles, which helped in our training.
On Friday the night before the match Coach Vicky, Ryan and Ross took us for a team meal at a local restaurant, where the two freshmen and myself got lost and couldn't find the restaurant. At last we made it and joined the rest of the team and sat down for a fantastic meal.
It was Saturday and match day, as most of the team and I headed to the training room at 7:30 a.m. to meet Jonathon, our super athletic trainer! After getting treatment, we headed to the courts for match prep, which is an hour and a half before the match start time.
Doubles started a little slow after losing the point and we went back into the team room knowing that we had to fight for every point to win all six singles.
USD is a feisty team and has an unusual style of play, which caused us some difficulty; however, we started strong in singles with Lacey, Susan and Sarah defeating their opponents and it came down to me, one of the three seniors for the deciding match.
I had beaten my opponent before in the fall season and found myself in a battle. After the not playing my best tennis and losing the first set, I knew I had to step up my game and play more aggressive in the second set and take my chances at the net. By this time I was the only match on and both teams and fans were cheering like crazy on the sidelines!
I found myself in a sticky situation in the second set and saved eight match points to win the set and ended up winning 6-1 in the third. Déjà vu happened, as I started to cramp in the final set and thought of Kim, having full body cramps last weekend against Vanderbilt and going to the hospital. But of course, Jonathon was there and saved the day with his never-ending supply of ice bags and telling me to down Powerade after Powerade.
After an intense match, we beat the Toreros 4-3.
I would like to say a big thank you for everyone who came out to support us, as we had one of our biggest crowds yet and it was great to see a lot of Mckale staff out on the courts!
On a personal note, I want to say a big thanks to Tom who met me on the side of my court who owes me a soda for our next home game and I hope he gets to read this!
It was a great win for the CATS and we are looking forward to Saturday at the Robson Center where we take on San Diego state Aztecs.
Hope to see you all there...
