                Most of the field has as many as two holes left to play in round two

               

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- With four golfers in the top 10 places, the University of Arizona grabbed the first round lead Monday at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate at Arizona National Golf Club.

 

Henry Liaw, Josh Esler, Nathan Tyler and Travis Esway each carded totals of two-under 69 or better to lead the Wildcats to the first round lead at 272 (-12).  Arizona leads the 16-team field by one stroke after 18 holes.  Rounding out the top five places was the Arizona State (273), New Mexico (280), Arizona Junior Varsity (281), and Denver (282).

 

Thirty-six holes were originally scheduled for Monday, but play was suspended due to darkness at 6:05 p.m. MST.  Teams still on the course in round two have as many as two holes remaining in order to compete the round.  Play will resume Tuesday at 8 a.m. MST.

 

At the time play was suspended, Arizona led the field with a total of 23-under par. Brigham Young (-19), Arizona State (-14), Arizona Junior Varsity (-11) and New Mexico (-6) round out the top-five places.

 

The Arizona Junior Varsity also got off to a solid start Monday, as the squad tallied a three-under 281 to open play.  Freshman Nicholas Park shot a two-under 69 to lead the junior varsity, while juniors Brian Prouty and Ben Marsh tallied one-under 70s.  All three were in the top 20 individually after round one.

 

Sophomore Trey Denton shot a four-over 75 Monday to round out the UA varsity team total.  Also competing for the UA junior varsity was freshman Ben Fox, who carded a one-over 72 and junior Mark Lamb, who carded a three-over 74.

 

Three Arizona golfers also are in the field as individuals.  Junior Brett Carter shot a five-over 76 and is tied for 60th place, while sophomore Billy Whalen carded a 10-over 81 and is tied for 81st place.  Junior Josh Wilks withdrew.

 

The 54-hole PING-Arizona Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow at Arizona National Golf Club, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout.  For live tournament scoring, please go to www.golfstat.com.
