Men?s Swim and Dive Qualify 12 for Day One Finals at NCAA Championships

Minneapolis, Minn. ?- The No. 8 men’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of preliminary action at the 2005 NCAA Championships Thursday at the University Aquatic Center qualifying 12 swimmers to compete in tonight’s finals which will take place at 7 p.m. (CST).

 

Starting the events for the Wildcats was the 200-yard free relay team composed of junior Simon Burnett, junior Lyndon Ferns, freshman Gerhard Zandberg and freshman Jonas Persson who finished third in the heat and fourth overall with a season best time of 1:17.49.

 

Junior Tyler DeBerry crushed his personal best time in the 500-yard freestyle finishing third overall with a time of 14:14.56. Three Wildcats qualified for the finals of the 50-yard freestyle. Ferns finished second overall with a time of 19.30 qualifying for the championship finals behind Fred Bousquet from Auburn, who broke the U.S Open, NCAA and pool records with a time of 18.74. Burnett and Zandberg qualified for the consolation finals as Burnett finished 10th overall (19.46) and Zandberg was15th (19.67).

 

For the final swimming event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay team of Zandberg, freshman Ivan Barnes, freshman Albert Subirats and Burnett set a new school record with a time of 3:10.19 finishing fourth overall.
