TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona football team completed its 14th practice of fall camp Tuesday afternoon at the Rincon Vista complex as the players worked out in helmets and shoulder pads.

The players continued to work on their basic individual drills, special teams, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 situations. During the 7-on-7 passing segment, sophomore quarterback Richard Kovalcheck completed five out of eight pass attempts, including two to tight end Brad Wood. Junior Adam Austin was four for six passing, and freshman Willie Tuitama was one for two.

The Wildcats went through an hour-long 11-on-11 period working on various situations including a red zone segment to finish practice. Offensive coordinator Mike Canales has been pleased with progress of the passing game and the development of the wide receivers.

“It’s important for them (receivers) to start fast this year,” said Canales who is in his second year with Arizona. “We need B.J. Vickers to step in and play a key role for us. We expect big things out from Mike Jefferson. Michael Thomas has come in and shown a lot of explosiveness. We becoming more consistent in what we do and that will allow us to attack more.”

Jefferson, a senior, is ready to step up as the leader of the group.

“I feel real confident,” commented Jefferson regarding his role in the offense. “I’m more relaxed and that comes with knowing the offense better and putting the work in during the off-season.”

One of the most impressive freshmen thus far in camp has been Thomas who has been a popular target for all three of Arizona’s quarterbacks.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” said Thomas of the fall camp practices. “It’s a lot of teaching and a lot of learning for me. I just want to get out there and make plays and learn from my mistakes.”

The Wildcats will hold their fourth two-a-day practice of fall camp on Wednesday. The team is scheduled to practice at 8 a.m. at the Rincon Vista Complex. The evening practice will be closed to the media and public.

Head coach Mike Stoops took the day off from briefing the media ... The Wildcats worked on their punt coverage team during the special teams segment with Danny Baugher handling all the punting duties ... B.J. Dennard worked out with the offense for the second day in a row.
