TUCSON -- After concluding the season with a runner-up performance at the Women's College World Series, the Arizona softball team finished second in both major polls released Tuesday.
It matched the highest ranking for the Cats in the 2010 campaign, as the team spent five weeks at No. 2 in the USA Today/NFCA poll and eight weeks at the spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
From 1991 to 2008, every Arizona squad had been ranked No. 1 for at least some time during the season. The 2009 Arizona team was ranked a season-high No. 6 to finish the campaign.
The UA, with eight returning starters, should be highly-ranked to begin the 2011 season.
Arizona has been ranked steadily in the USA Today/NFCA poll since 1989, and in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll since its inception in the early 2000s.
