Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller
"This is one of those games where we can look back in a month or two and see that we fought hard for that win. I watched Northern Arizona a lot before our game, and they're a team that executes very well on man-to-man defense, and they'll have two or three backdoors and two or three lobs per game. They really tested our skill and intelligence tonight. They're deliberate in their execution, and their guard, Cameron Jones, is as good as any guard we'll face. He's the preseason player of the year in their conference, and he had twenty-one points in the first half, which is very hard to do."
"They were killing us on the glass in the first half, but I think we did a lot better with rebounding in the second. We shot ten for twenty-two from three tonight, but it definitely didn't feel like it. We had a very bad start, and we have to start making our shots or it's going to be extremely difficult to get the win. This was a very awkward game, but I'm excited to see how we were able to fight back."
"I think Kevin Parrom and Brendon Lavender really stepped up and made plays tonight. Kevin played well, and was the best match-up we could set against Jones, who is very difficult to guard. Jones had ten field goals inside the arc, which is hard to do for a perimeter player."
"When you go up against a team playing man-to-man defense, you're going to eventually wear them down. True, there will be a made backdoor or lob, but some of those shots that were going in early, weren't in the second half. Brendon's steal and the two threes he had in the late second half been huge for us, and Kevin's overall performance was the reason we got the win tonight."
"Sometimes depth is felt in bringing in bodies left and right and using all the combinations we have, but on a game like tonight's depth was felt in the performances of our long starters, the guys off the bench, and their huge contributions. I like that we fought back, but it's obvious that some individuals aren't playing as well as they should be, and they can only get away with that for so long."
"We're not a big team, and we really need to work on taking the charge. I've said that the last couple games, but we just haven't been able to execute that part of our defense very well. They just have to step up and take it."
Arizona Player Quotes
On the stolen inbounds pass:
"We were playing good hard defense. We have been scouting them all week and I made a play and luckily got the steal. I was just open and luckily my teammates found me and I knocked them down. I have to thank my teammates for the great passes."
On the first half:
"They (NAU) didn't get a very good warm-up and we tried to take advantage of it. We struggled rebounding in the first half, but we picked it up in the second half."
On Brendon Lavender:
"I always tell Lavender `just shoot.' He can shoot. I don't know if you guys know that, but we know that. He can shoot."
On (NAU's) Cameron Jones:
"He's a good player, a really good player, but I played him as best as I could. He got a couple drives but I made him work for everything. I tried my best."
On Northern Arizona's back door cuts:
"It was a lack of communication. "The three was setting a screen and Derrick and I did a poor job communicating. That's my fault."
On the last three games:
"The problem with the Kansas and BYU games is we looked at them as two big games instead of approaching every game the same. We just have to go out there and play basketball."
On the first half:
"We just have to come out and be ready to play. Like I said you just have to come out and rebound. That's it."
On Northern Arizona:
"They're a good team. Even though they're Northern Arizona, a lot of people don't know who they are. They play well as a team. They have a good player in Cameron Jones. They're an underrated team."
On his performance:
"Honestly, I didn't play as well as I should have. I just have to come to practice and play better next game."
