Cats Open Fall Tourney with Convincing Win

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona’s softball team opened its fall tournament with a 10-0, five-inning thrashing of Arizona Western.


After Western’s Ashlee Ackerman began the game by reaching on an error, winning pitcher Leslie Wolfe’s did not allow a base runner the rest of the way.


The Wildcats were equally dominant at the plate, where they put up 10 runs in the first three innings, on 13 hits.


In the home half of the first, UA jumped on Matador hurler Courtney Davis for three runs on three hits, punctuated with Callista Balko’s two-run blast to center field.


In the bottom of the second, freshman Laine Roth singled in her first at-bat as a Wildcat, before coming around to score on a two-out single off the bat of Caitlin Lowe. 


UA’s offensive attack unloaded in the third for a half dozen runs on six hits. 


In all, six of UA’s nine hitters reached base at least twice.


Arizona Western responded to the loss with a walk-off victory over the Hum-Babe Cats.

Arizona next plays at 5 p.m. on Saturday against New Mexico at Hillenbrand Stadium.  Following their contest against the Lobos, the Cats will take on Central Arizona at 7 p.m.
