TUCSON, Ariz. - Sophomore Jon Gaston led a red-hot Arizona baseball club to a perfect 4-0 record against a pair of nationally ranked teams last week and has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for doing so. In the four games, one a non-conference contest against No. 10 Arizona State and the three others in UA’s Pac-10 opening weekend against 2006 College World Series champions Oregon State, Gaston went a combined 7 for 10 (.700) with two doubles, a triple, four RBI, four runs scored, five walks and was a perfect 5 for 5 in stolen base tries.

He was named the second-annual Challenge at Chase MVP after leading Arizona to a 6-5 win over ASU at Chase Field in Phoenix on Wednesday. He finished the contest against the Sun Devils 2 for 3 with a triple, two stolen bases, a run scored and a game-high three RBI. He also came up with a key outfield assist against ASU to end a four-run Devil rally in the seventh inning.

Two days later he was a driving force behind UA’s three-game sweep of defending national champion Beavers at home to open Pac-10 play. Against No. 2 Oregon State, Gaston finished 5 for 7 (.714) with two doubles, three stolen bases, three runs scored and a RBI. He also drew four walks and was hit by two pitches to lead to a very impressive .846 on-base percentage to go along with his 1.000 slugging percentage for the weekend.

The Player of the Week honor is the first in Gaston's two-year career, the 48th all-time for a Wildcat and the second in 2007. Classmate Brad Glenn was feted with conference honors earlier this season.
