TUCSON — The University of Arizona men’s tennis team splashed into the New Year with a No. 32 team ranking in the 2010-11 Division I Men’s ITA/Campbell Rankings and senior Andres Carrasco received a No. 16 spot in the ITA Southwest regional singles rankings.
“We have everything in place to have a successful season,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “Now it’s just a matter of going out there and getting the job done.”
Carrasco, a senior, finished the 2010 fall season with a 5-4 singles record while compiling a 17-12 singles record during the 2009-10 campaign. The Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native currently holds an overall 54-30 career singles record as a Wildcat and a 29-19 overall doubles record.
In the fall, junior Jason Zafiros entered the ITA/Campbell preseason singles rankings at 107. During the 2009-10 season, the Wildcats saw four different players enter the single’s rankings throughout the year. Along with singles, the duo of Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi entered the rankings along with the duo of Borja Malo and Pat Metham who climbed into the rankings six different times.
Last season, the Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 31 as a team in the ITA rankings, their highest ranking came during the first week of dual match competition at No. 23 and they held that spot for three weeks. The team also advanced to the NCAA tournament for their eighth time in school history and compiled an overall 13-11 record. The Wildcats made history on April 11 in Tucson when they topped then No. 10 UCLA 4-3 for the first time in 70 attempts.
The Wildcat’s will kick off the 2011 season on Sat., Jan. 22 at home against UC Riverside at 11 a.m.
