Post-Game Quotes

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “We played well, but the lack of depth hurts. UCLA scored a lot in transition and off of our turnovers. But that is due to people being tired, and we make mistakes when we are tired.”

“This team is like a gas tank and we used all of our fuel up on Thursday’s game. We had a light practice yesterday and a light shootaround today, but I think we were just emotionally, mentally and physically tired. We started out in man-to-man defense, but then we had to switch to zone for most of the game because we got too tired and we don’t have any depth on the bench right now.”

“The turnovers killed us. Against USC, we had 11 and today I think it was due to mental breakdowns and the girls getting tired.”

“It was very hard with only six players. We played with a great deal of heart, but when we get tired, we make a lot of mental mistakes. We have to keep playing hard and smart and not put ourselves in bad situations. Natalie and Whitney had three fouls in the first half. The difference is that Natalie played smarter in the second half.”

“We need to stay tough; it’s disappointing to lose and the girls are really disappointed because they put everything into Thursday’s game and ended up not having quite enough to get the job done today.”

“I hope to get a couple of players back next week. I think it is going to be good to have a day off; it will give us some time to rest.”

“I am proud to see Kelsey (Burns) out there playing better every game.

“Jessie (Robinson) played her first game in a long time and I think she did great. I see a lot of pluses with her and she is a great kid who plays really hard.”

Freshman guard Kelsey Burns: “It just seemed like things wouldn’t fall for us. We made a lot of mistakes and there are things we can learn from. We need to start playing smarter. We never play without heart.”

On fatigue being a factor

“We are kind of short on the bench. I think you can’t let that affect you.”

“It is one of those games you try to forget about.”

“I think a lot of it was mental mistakes we can’t afford to make. We need to learn from it and come back.”

“I definitely never play this much. It is definitely different than coming off the bench. Freshman year is tough in the beginning. You are trying to figure things out. You have to be ready to stop up when needed.”

On UCLA’s play

“You have to hand it to them. When we hit a rough patch, they really stepped it up.”

Sophomore guard Jessie Robinson: “The effort and hard work is always there and will always be there. I’ve always been for the team. I knew tonight I had to play my heart out.”

On having a shorter bench

“We have to be smarter. We can’t afford to have the fouls. We can’t really make so many errors.”

UCLA Head Coach Kathy Olivier: “It was nice to be able to split on the road. Obviously, we wanted to win two games, but we have been playing good basketball. We got into a rhythm tonight and played hard.”

“Noelle (Quinn) has been playing so well as of late. She’s scored 20 or more points in each of the last four games. “

“We actually talked about utilizing our height advantage inside. It’s not something that is usually the case, but it was something we could focus on in this game. I thought we did a good job, especially hitting the glass.”

“You have to give them credit. Being down so many players, it’s not easy for them. But they continue to play hard. They give you their best shot every time. They play with a lot of effort.”

“We need to keep improving from this game on. We’re playing good basketball, but we can still get better and we need to get better.”
