The Arizona Wildcat men's team starts the season at 1-0 with a 7-0 win over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The Cats clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and two and swept through singles in the 26th meeting between the two schools.
"I felt that the guys were nervous early on with today being the first match and once they settled in they did a good job," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "It's always good to get that first win under your belt."
First to finish in doubles action was the sophomore duo of Andre Vidaller and Kieren Thompson on court two. After a close start, the duo won five straight games before Patrick Schimmelbauer and Ben Lentz came back with a win to bring the match to 7-3. Vidaller and Thompson held the Lumberjack team two three by winning the next game and clinching the match, 8-3.
Newcomer Sumeet Shinde made his collegiate tennis debut in doubles play with partner Giacomo Miccini on court one. The duo clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over NAU's Robin Pezzutto and Shaun Waters.
With the doubles point clinched the Cats entered singles action, where Arizona won all six matches.
In a quick match on court one, Miccini defeated Pezzutto to earn Arizona's first singles point. The Recenati, Italy native took an early lead in the first set and never let up, he held Pezzutto to three wins in two sets and won the match, 6-2, 6-1.
The Cats earned their second singles point on court two where Urquidi beat Martin. Urquidi won the first set quickly, holding Martin to two wins. In the second set, Martin took an early lead but Urquidi battled his way back to tie the set at 5-5. Martin won the next game to take the 6-5 lead. Urquidi, an El Paso, Texas native, won the next two to clinch the match and another singles point for Arizona.
Shinde, who joined the team in December, clinched his first collegiate singles win on court four. Shinde took an early lead in the first set and after a comeback attempt by NAU's Waters, the Pune, India native won the set 6-3. In the second set, Shinde held Waters to one win to clinch the victory and the match for Arizona.
On court two, C. Bermudez remained locked in a back and forth battle with Schimmelbauer. The Tucson local defeated Schimmelbauer 7-5 in the first set and came out strong in the second set to win the match, 7-5, 6-2.
Vidaller battled D. Bermudez on court three where he took the lead winning the first set, 6-1. D. Bermudez, a Tucson local, came back to win the second set 6-3. With the match tied at one set all, court three entered a tiebreaker. The two battled back and forth until Vidaller pulled away to win 10-7 and clinch the match.
On court six, Thompson got a late start in his match against Lentz. The Brisbane, Austrailia native rolled to a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory to round out the day for the Wildcats.
Arizona begins the season at 1-0 while Northern Arizona falls to 0-1.
The Wildcats will play next when they host Sacramento State at 12 p.m. on Jan. 27 and San Francisco at 12 p.m. on Jan. 29, both matches will be held at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
