TUCSON, Ariz. -University of Arizona Wildcat women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2011 season with a 1-0 shutout victory over the visiting Oregon Ducks Friday night on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. Arizona's last victory was also a 1-0 shutout, over Cal on October 22, 2010.

Junior defender Alex Smith hit the game winner, also her first goal of the season, on a penalty kick in the 69th minute that flew past Oregon (6-6-1, 1-3-0) keeper Abby Steele and into the upper left corner of the net.

Arizona (1-9-2, 1-2-1) out shot the Ducks 12-8, with sophomore forward Ana-Maria Montoya leading the way with four shot attempts, two on goal. Fellow sophomore Jazmin Ponce came away with two shots, one on goal, while juniors Kirstyn Magyar and Jessica Culver, sophomores Samantha Cummings and Shannon Heinzler, and freshman Mykaylin Rosenquist added one each on the night.

"First off, I have to congratulate our group, because what they did tonight took a lot of guts," said head coach Lisa Oyen. "I give credit to Oregon, they gave themselves some good chances, and gave us some tough situations, but Ashley (Jett) came up big, especially with her saves in the second half. It says a lot to our girls' commitment and patience that we were able to get this result tonight, and I am very proud."

In the net, keeper Ashley Jett had five saves in her first shutout of the season, including a pair of leaping deflections late in the game to keep Arizona ahead. For the Ducks, Steele had four saves to add to her lone goal against.

For Oregon, forward Bri Pugh led the offense with seven of the Ducks' eight shot attempts, four of which were on-goal.

Up next, the Wildcats will host Oregon State on Sunday, October 9 at noon on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
