????????????ATHENS, Ga. ?C?The top-ranked Arizona baseball team (0-1) struggled defensively in a season-opening loss to Georgia (1-0) at Foley Field on Friday. A pair of early fielding miscues led to four unearned runs in the first three innings as the Bulldogs prevailed, 9-7, over the Wildcats on a wet and cold night.

?

????????????ˇ?We didnˇ?t play sound defense early and that set a bad tone for the night,ˇ± UA head coach Andy Lopez said. ˇ?We need to come out and play the game the way I know weˇ?re capable of playing.

?

ˇ?This is just one (game) though and I think after finally getting a chance to get out on the field we learned some things that you can only find out in a game-like atmosphere. Weˇ?ll make some adjustments and get back to work tomorrow.ˇ±

?

????????????The defensive struggles started early and turned a one-run Georgia first inning into a 4-0 Bulldog lead.

?

UGAˇ?s Michael Demperio led off the home half of the frame getting hit by a Preston Guilmet pitch and was pushed to third on a one-out double by Gordon Beckham.

?

????????????Rich Poythress plated Demperio with a sac fly in the next at bat and Guilmet appeared to limit the damage to just the one run when he got DH Joshua Fields to ground the ball to C.J. Ziegler at first. The senior first baseman however saw the ball run up his arm and into shallow right for an error that allowed Beckham to score and extend the inning.

?

????????????Catcher Joey Lewis made the Wildcats pay for the miscue with a two-run double to push the lead to 4-0 UGA.

?

????????????The Wildcats countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a back-to-back RBI singles by Brad Glenn and Colt Sedbrook to cut the edge in half, but the Dogs tacked on another run in the hold half of the frame on a solo homer by Ryan Peisel and took advantage of another fielding bugaboo in the third to go up 6-2

?

????????????A leadoff triple by Olson appeared to go to waste when he couldnˇ?t score on a shallow fly ball by Fields and Lewis grounded to UAˇ?s drawn-in third baseman Dillon Baird. The junior college transfer made a play on the ball and appeared to have Olson nailed, but Wildcat catcher Dwight Childs and the ball got separated at the plate for another run-scoring error.

?

????????????The Wildcats roared back with three runs on one hit and a Georgia error to make it 6-5 in the fourth, but the Bulldogs responded with two runs in the fifth and answered Zieglerˇ?s solo homer in the seventh with a run of their own to push the edge to 9-6.

?

????????????Jon Gaston pulled UA within two with a sac fly in the eighth, by Fields took over the pitching duties and struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the UGA win.

?

????????????UAˇ?s Guilmet (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs, only four earned, on seven hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked three in his shortest outing since March 11, 2005 at Mississippi State.

?

????????????UGAˇ?s Holder (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in five innings of work. The right-hander allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits with four Ks and two walks.

?

Fields, who returned to Georgia for his senior season despite being a second round selection by Atlanta last June, capped off an impressive night with his first save. The hard-throwing right-hander also went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a pair of runs scored as the DH.

?

????????????Baird, Gaston and Sedbrook paced the Wildcats offensively, with each player collecting a pair of hits. Gaston chipped in with two RBI and junior classmate Brad Glenn scored a pair of runs in the defeat.

?

????????????Arizona and Georgia will meet up for game two of the three-game series on Saturday. Senior left-hander David Coulon is the scheduled starter in the 12 p.m. MST game.
