WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Roger Matalonga, ranked No. 18 in singles, has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5. Matalonga was 2-0 in singles over the weekend, defeating UC Santa Barbara’s Nick Brotman and Pacific’s Jorgen Vestil.
Matalonga, a senior from Terrassa, Spain, had to fight off 11 match points to earn his victory over Brotman. The victory also gave the Wildcats a 4-3 win over UC Santa Barbara. On Sunday, Matalonga came from one set down to defeat Vestil.
This is Matalonga's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and first weekly honor all-time for Arizona.
No. 55 Arizona has a bye this week. They will return to action at home the following week, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. against Fresno State.
