Odgen, Utah ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (8-1-0) defeated Weber State (3-7-0) 2-1 today in Odgen, Utah. Arizona scored once in each half. With their eighth victory of the season, the Wildcats have equaled the most wins in a season for the program, as Arizona went 8-11-1 in 1997.

Arizona got the first goal of the game at 12:49 when junior Nikki David scored off of a pass from senior Candice Wilks. The goal was David’s fourth of the season. Both teams were unable to score in the rest of the half.

Arizona improved its lead at 62:13 with a goal by freshman Sarah Litt. The assist went to sophomore Erin Bevacqua.

Just over 11 minutes later, Weber State’s Naomi Felix cut Arizona’s lead in half with a goal.

“It was good to get a goal early in the game,” Head Coach Dan Tobias said. “We didn’t play particularly well in the rest of the first half, and it was nice to get that early goal.”

Tobias feels the Wildcats came out stronger in the second half.

“We came out great in the second half,” he said. “Vanesha Bailey had great two chances, but we were unable to convert. It would have been nice to have a goal early in the half.”

He was impressed with the intensity of the Weber State Wildcats.

“They worked exceptionally hard throughout the entire game,” he explained. “They battled and did a good job getting balls forward. They also did a good job of getting in behind our defense.”

Arizona earned its seventh victory of the season on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Brigham Young. Tobias is pleased that the Wildcats were able to go 2-0 on the road trip.

“We had two good wins on the road,” he said. “We are looking forward to coming home. The team is excited to play in front of the home crowd.”

The Wildcats take on Pepperdine at 7 p.m. (PST) Friday, Oct. 1 and Colorado College at 1 p.m. (PST) Sunday, Oct. Both games will be played at the Wildcats’ home facility, Murphey Stadium. The stadium is located at 15th Street and Plumer Avenue.
