Sophomore forward in contention for player-of-the-year honors

TUCSON , Ariz. ?C ?University of Arizona menˇ?s basketball player Chase Budinger was named to the 2007-08 John R. Wooden Award Midseason top-30 list, it was announced Monday by the Los Angeles Athletic Clubˇ?s Wooden Award Committee.

The Wildcat sophomore is included among a list of 30 student-athletes who are under consideration for the 2008 John R. Wooden Award, which is given annually to college basketballˇ?s player of the year.

Budinger, a 6-foot-7, 203-pound sophomore forward from Encinitas, Calif., is averaging 17.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 20 games this season. He is shooting 44.6 percent (123-of-276) from the field to go with 19 steals. Heˇ?s scored in double figures 18 times this season, including seven 20-point games and one 30-point effort.

Players who do not make the Midseason list are still eligible for the national ballot, which will be selected in March and will consist of approximately 20 players, chosen by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board Committee, who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.

More than 1,000 voters, comprised of sports media members and college basketball experts from across the nation, will then cast their votes to determine both the 10-member All-American Team and Player of the Year. In late March, the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced.

The 2008 Award ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, the Wooden Award All-American Teams, and the Legends of Coaching Award to Pat Summitt of the University of Tennessee, will be held at The Los Angeles Athletic Club the weekend of April 11-12. The 32nd Annual Wooden Award Gala, with a reception and dinner program, will take place the evening of Friday, April 11 at the Sheraton Downtown Los Angeles. On Saturday, April 12, the Wooden Award Announcement and trophy presentation will be televised.

Arizona (14-6, 4-3 Pac-10) will next be in action on Thursday, Jan. 31, when the team plays at USC. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. PST and can be seen nationally on Fox Sports Net.
