Cats Fall to No. 7 Florida, 5-2

In its first road test of the season, the Arizona men’s tennis team fell to No.7 Florida 5-2 at the National Spring Kick-Off in Gainesville, Fla.


The Gators (3-0) picked up the doubles point winning two matches, the third match did not finish.


The Florida duo of Johnny Hamui and Jeff Dadamo defeated the Wildcats duo of Jay Goldman and Ravid Hazi 8-4 in position #2. The Gators also won position #3, with Alex Lacroix and Carlos Cueto defeating Andres Arango and Jason Zafiros. The match did that did not finish featured the No. 18 Pat Metham and Francois VanderMerwe, who were trailing Antione Benneteau and Joey Burkhardt 7-5.


In singles play, the Wildcats (2-1) were only able to win two matches. Playing in position #4, sophomore Andres Carrasco defeated Johnny Hamui 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Jason Zafiros played in position #6 and defeated Eric Corace 6-3, 6-3.


Sophomore Jay Goldman, the only Wildcat ranked in singles play, played in the top spot and was defeated by Alex Lacroix in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.


The Wildcats will play the loser of North Carolina State/Texas A & M tomorrow Jan. 31, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. Tucson time.
