TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona women's tennis singles players Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands, as well as the doubles team of Mlakar and Debbie Larocque, will open the 2003 season ranked in the top 100 of the pre-season Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
Beginning the season at No. 18, junior Maja Mlakar moves up from last season's final ranking of No. 28. Mlakar, who started out last season ranked No. 13, played primarily in the No. 2 position for the Wildcats during the 2002-2003 regular season and earned a singles record of 26-15.
Junior Dianne Hollands joins Mlakar in the rankings at No. 29 in the poll. This is Hollands' highest ranking of her career, with her previous high coming in last year's postseason rankings at No. 44. Hollands spent the majority of last season as the Wildcats' No. 3 player and posted an overall singles record of 28-15.
Mlakar also teams up with senior Debbie Larocque as the No. 20 doubles team in the ITA rankings. The two did not play together last season as a doubles team. Mlakar and Larocque spent much of the 2001-2002 season as doubles partners and were ranked as high as No. 4.
The women's tennis team is currently slated to open the 2003 fall season on Thursday, Sept. 18th at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.
