Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Women’s Soccer Program will welcome an incoming class of five for the 2007 fall season, head coach Dan Tobias announced last week.  This recruiting class is Tobias’ fourth at Arizona. Tobias’ first three recruiting classes have brought the Arizona soccer program to a whole new level of success. With a Pac-10 Championship and a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in the last three years, Tobias expects this year’s class to continue to bring the program to new heights.

"We have added five student-athletes of such great quality and character and done so without the benefit of having any seniors graduating this spring," said Tobias.  "All of them are excited about joining the U of A family and we are extremely happy about bringing them into the program with such a strong nucleus of returning student-athletes.  This is certainly a great time for Wildcat Soccer."

Arizona Soccer Recruiting Class for 2007

Leila Amini

Upland, Calif./Upland HS

Midfielder

Amini is one of three California-natives to come to Arizona next year.  Amini, from Upland, Calif., attends Upland High School and competes as a midfielder for head coach Kerri Fahres.  Amini was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention Team her freshman and sophomore years.  Her team is still competing this year in the CIF Championships after winning the Division I Championship in 2006.  Amini also competes for FC Barcelona and head coach Bryan Kuderman.  The team was Las Vegas 2003 Region IV champions, Surf Cup XI Champs and 2006 National Cup semi-finalists.

According to head coach Dan Tobias: "Leila is a very savvy and quick attacking player.  She has the right mentality and a tremendous work ethic as those things are so important for today's student-athlete.  She is an excellent addition to the Wildcat family."

Lauren Bennett

Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS

Defender

Bennett, from Seal Beach, Calif., is a four-year letterwinner and team captain under head coach Pat Ross at Los Alamitos High School.  She was the team’s Defensive MVP in her junior season as well as a All-Conference second team selection.  The team won the 2005 CIF Championship.  Bennett is co-captain for CRSC Infinity under coaches Mauricio Ingras and Jeff Joyner.  The team won three tournament championships this past year and was 2005 League Cup Champs.

According to head coach Dan Tobias:  "We are so excited to add a person of Lauren's talents to our program.  She has tremendous potential and she is such a strong central defender with her excellent ball-winning abilities.  Our future is very bright with Lauren wearing Arizona red and blue."

Karina Camacho

Tucson, Ariz./Cienega HS

Midfielder

Camacho is the lone Tucson-native to sign and hails from Cienega High School, under head coach Tom Balderamma. As a midfielder, she is a four-year letterwinner and was the team’s Most Valuable Player in her senior season.  In her sophomore season, she was named to the Kino All-Region team and second team All-State.  Camacho is the captain for the Arizona Rush Club Team, coached by Chris Fernandez and former Wildcat All-American Mallory Miller. The 2005 squad was a finalist in the State Cup.

According to head coach Dan Tobias:  “There is a ton of excitement here now that Karina will be playing for her hometown team.  She is a very creative and crafty midfield player with great vision and that makes her so dangerous as both a passer and scorer from that position.   She brings so many other intangibles and she is an outstanding addition to the U of A family.”

Kristin Griffin

Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS

Midfielder

Griffin is a midfielder from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. She competed there as a freshman and was named Rookie of the Year.  Griffin competes for Southbank Soccer Club and the Sereno Soccer Club.  She was named to the U-15, U-16 and U-17 Region IV ODP Teams.

According to head coach Dan Tobias:  "We have thoroughly enjoyed watching Kristin grow over the last several years and we are equally excited about growth potential in the college arena.  She has that inner drive that makes her so special and she adds so many great qualities to our program.  What a tremendous new member of the Wildcat family.”

Jackie Zinke

Corona del Mar, Calif./Mater Dei HS

Mid/Forward

Another Southern California-native, Zinke attends Mater Dei High School in Corona del Mar, Calif. where she was teammates with current Wildcat, Jacquline Broussard.  She has earned four letters and is a co-captain playing under head coach Matty West. Zinke earned first team all-league honors in her freshman, sophomore and junior years as well as all-district honors in her junior season. She competes for head coach Ziad Khoury on the Slammers F.C. club team. The Slammers were 2003 and 2005 National Champions.

According to head coach Dan Tobias:  "We really believe Jackie was the sleeper of the 2007 class and that creates even more enthusiasm surrounding her decision to become part of the U of A family. She is so versatile and can play effectively anywhere.  The sky is the limit for her and we are delighted to be guiding forces over a great, next four years as a Wildcat.”

"We can talk about how we addressed specific needs and added depth at certain positions as those are valid points,” explained Tobias.  “Aside from that, we have all been so impressed with the attitude, the desire and the character of these five incoming freshmen.  They understand the tradition of success that has been formed here and they have a tremendous hunger to take the U of A Soccer program to new and exciting places.  With our entire team returning and these five new student-athletes, Wildcat soccer has plenty of reasons to look forward to the 2007 season and beyond.”
