TUCSON, Ariz. - Anna Chappell, a junior forward on the Arizona women’s basketball team, was recently awarded the first-ever John "Button" Salmon Award. Chappell was among 15 athletes nominated for the award.

The John "Button" Salmon Award recognizes an NCAA athlete that is committed to serving the U of A outside of sports through achievement in scholastics, campus involvement and school spirit.

The award is named after Salmon, who was the Associated Students of The University of Arizona (ASUA) President, starting quarterback and a three-year catcher for the baseball team. Involved in a serious car accident, Salmon suffered a spinal cord injury and died on Oct. 18, 1926. His final message to his teammates was, "Tell them ... tell the team to bear down." This is where the slogan "Bear Down" originates.
