The University of Arizona football team has been all business in two-a-day training camp sessions, and the Wildcats continued their preseason training with a 90-minute workout at the UA practice facility Tuesday afternoon.
The team closed Tuesday's session with two-minute drill work, and head coach John Mackovic was encouraged by the improvement shown on both sides of the ball.
"Today was the first time we put in the no-back offense, and we didn't look very good in the first two-minute drill," Mackovic said. "But, we made some adjustments, and the receivers did a nice job of catching the ball and getting out of bounds towards the end of practice."
"We are all doing some good things on offense and defense, but everybody needs to work and continue to make more improvements every day," he added.
The team is set to don full pads for the first time Wednesday morning. Mackovic said that the Wildcats will focus on inside drills, and that the full pads will give the players a chance to follow through on the plays even though full tackling still will not be permitted.
Senior offensive tackle Darren Safranek left practice after injuring his left knee and will be evaluated. Safranek, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive lineman from Tucson, Ariz., had offseason surgery on his right knee and shoulder following the 2001 season.
In the meantime, offensive lineman Chris Johnson moved into the tackle spot, while senior Makoa Freitas continued to work at offensive guard for the second day.
Junior halfback Clarence Farmer (slight hamstring pull) and junior defensive end Andre Torrey (sprained hip) were held out of practice and will continue to be evaluated in the next two to three days.
Mackovic announced that sophomore strong safety Danny Perry has left the team. Perry, a graduate of Tucson's Sabino High School, had reconstructive knee surgery at the start of the 2001 season and redshirted last year. Mackovic said Perry "had other things he wanted to do." Mackovic added that redshirt freshman defensive lineman Matt Lam also has departed from the team.
Arizona will hold camp until Aug. 23, with twice daily practices scheduled on all but three of the days until then. The Wildcats practice at the Rincon Vista complex and have some scheduled sessions at the UA practice field and Arizona Stadium.
