WACO, Texas ?- Arizona’s women’s tennis team completed the first day play at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas with two wins and two losses in singles play, coupled with a victory in doubles.
Senior Dianne Hollands lost in the second round to Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller 6-2, 7-5, following her first round bye. Following her loss, Hollands defeated Kimberly Patenaude of Tulsa 6-1, 6-2 in the Gold Back Draw round of 16. Hollands is scheduled to play Ristine Olson from the University of Texas next in the Gold Back Draw.
Senior Maja Mlakar defeated Santie Delport of Tulsa 6-3, 6-1 in a second round match. Mlakar, the tournament’s No. 9 seed, will next play Delport’s Tulsa teammate Daniela Muscolino.
Junior transfer Stephanie Balzert was the only Wildcat to play in the first round. The native of Germany won her first match for UA, defeating Tulsa’s Tiffany Smith 6-1, 6-3. In the second round, Balzert fell to Blair DiSesa of Rice. Balzert will now face Jenny Langer in the Green Back Draw round of 16. Balzert and Langer last faced each other in Balzert’s final match of her career at Baylor last March 31, which Langer won 6-1, 6-2.
Arizona’s top-ranked doubles team of Hollands and Mlakar defeated Rice’s Tracie Chong and Amy Cao 8-0 in their second round match at the Baylor Invitational.
Hollands and Mlakar’s top-seeding earned them a bye in the first round. The pair will next play Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio of Georgia Tech.
The Arizona women’s tennis team will continue play at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas on Sept. 18, 2004.
