Wildcats in Second-place after Day-one of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas ?- After the first day of competition at the 2004 Texas Invitational, the fifth-ranked women’s swim team is in first-place with 281.5 points and the No. 7 men are in second-place with 235 points.


            The Wildcats also tallied a total of 13 automatic bids to the NCAA Championships including seven from the women’s team and six from the men.


            The 200y medley relay team of junior Jenna Gresdal, freshman Lacey Nymeyer, junior Marshi Smith and freshman Courtney Cashion won with an automatic qualifying time of 1:30.55. Senior Emily Mason won the 500y freestyle posting her first automatic qualifying time of the evening (4:40.51).


            Sophomore Whitney Myers won the 100y butterfly (52.89) as well as the 200y individual medley (1:59.35) tallying two automatic qualifying times. Mason finished third in the 200y IM, posting her second individual automatic qualifying time. In the 50y freestyle, Gresdal won with a time of 22.52 and Nymeyer came in third (22.86), both earning automatic qualifying times.


            The 400y medley relay team of Gresdal, junior Erin Sieper, Myers and senior Jessica Hayes finished second with a consideration time of 3:38.68.


            In the preliminaries of the 200y free relay for the men, junior Simon Burnett, junior Lyndon Ferns, freshman Jonas Persson and senior Byron Jeffers won the event posting a consideration time of 1:18.49.


            In the 100y butterfly, Ferns finished first with and automatic qualifying time of 46.04 and freshman Albert Subirats finished fifth with a consideration time of 48.07. Junior Tyler DeBerry won the prelims of the 500y freestyle posting an individual automatic qualifying time of 4:18.07 and junior Dave Rollins placed second in the 200y individual medley with an automatic qualifying time of 1:46.13. Burnett won the 50y freestyle (19.28) and Ferns finished second (19.52) both posting automatic qualifying times.


            The 400y medley relay team of freshman Nick Thoman, senior Nate Stevens, Ferns and Burnett won with and automatic qualifying time of 3:10.84.


            The Wildcats will be back in action Friday in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center for the second day of the Texas Invitational. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m. (CST).
