Jason Gardner Named Finalist for Naismith Player of the Year Award

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona junior guard Jason Gardner was one of 20 players named as finalists for the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award, it was announced Tuesday by Jackie Bradford, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Gardner, a 5-foot-10, 181-pound native of Indianapolis, Ind., is averaging 20.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists through 23 games this season. He averages 37.5 minutes per game and shoots 40.4 percent from the field, including 36.1 percent from three-point range. Gardner has scored in double figures in 21 of 23 games and has tallied five or more assists in 11 of his last 14 games.

A 2001-02 Arizona tri-captain, Gardner has 11 20-point games to his credit this season, including a career-best 34 points on two occasions. He has earned Pac-10 Player-of-the-Week, Fiesta Bowl Classic and Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic Most-Valuable-Player honors for his efforts this season.

Gardner and the ninth-ranked Wildcats (17-6 overall, 10-3 Pac-10) are next in action on Thursday, Feb. 14, at No. 20 UCLA. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. MST and can be seen nationally on Fox Sports Net.
