Quoting Lute Olson . . .

What does it mean to have Chase Budinger back to anchor the team?
Well, Chase gives us the most experienced guy that we have on the team. As a freshman, he was the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and played a lot of minutes last year as well. We're getting a great athlete who has been a key guy for two years. His experience is critical.

When you look at the other juniors in Nic Wise and Jordan Hill, both of them played limited amounts of time as freshmen and then played major roles as sophomores. But with Chase and his ability and experience, I think he'll be ready to accept much of the leadership role as well, which is much easier when you are a perimeter player.

Chase will play a wing. That doesn't necessarily mean that he will be a three. He may be a two or a three because he handles the ball well enough that we can use him as a primary ball handler.

Wise, Hill and Budinger give you a nice core group. That should be a good group to build around, right?
Yes, it will. The guy that I think is going to surprise people next year is Fendi Onobun. Last year he played most of the season with a stress fracture in his tibia, and he's had surgery on that. I think he's going to be a factor for us. The big thing is his confidence. He's been here for four years. I really think his maturity will come out and his senior year will be a good one for him, and we can build the team around those four veterans.

What about the young guys?
We feel really good about the sophomore class. Zane Johnson is a great shooter. He's really worked hard in the offseason. He's much, much stronger, has much more confidence in his shooting and has made strides defensively. His ability to shoot the ball is going to help us.

Jamelle Horne is as good of an athlete as we have on the team. I compare him a lot as a freshman to Richard Jefferson. I think Jamelle is going to be a key guy for us.

Alex Jacobson was redshirted last year, but he's worked very hard to change his body. He still needs work, but he's a willing learner and he's going to show a lot of improvement. I still feel that Alex will contribute. He has a big body, he's very strong, and he goes to the boards on every shot, which is a good combination to have.

Is there a mindset to play at a quicker pace than in the past?
That's determined by the quickness you have on the floor, but I think we're going to be very quick on the court. The guys feel comfortable with that style. It's what they came here to play.

What about the incoming freshman class?
I think it's a freshman class that will have an immediate impact on this team. The nice thing is that they can have an impact and play alongside some upperclassmen, so the ups and downs might not be so great. I like that freshman class. Obviously, we have some guys with unlimited potential. We're very pleased with the make-up of that group.
