TUCSON, Ariz. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s golf team junior varsity shot a two-under-par 282 Saturday and finished eighth at the Shootout at Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas.
The Wildcat JV made marked improvements in each round as its second and third round tallies were at least 10 strokes lower than the previous roundˇ?s total. Arizonaˇ?s two-under final tally gave the Wildcats a three-round total of 877 (+25) and an eighth-place finish in the 18-team field. UNLV (840) won the event by 17 strokes over runner up Cal State Northridge. The UNLV B team finished in third place (869), ahead of Southern Utah (870) and San Jose State (871).
UA freshman Jonathan Khan earned tied for 10th place in his first collegiate event after carding a one-over 214 total. Khan, a native of Tucson, Ariz., rebounded nicely from an opening-round 78 to play the final 36 holes at six-under par. His closing 66 and the top-10 finish are the low round and best finish by a Wildcat golfer this season.
Mark Lamb tied for 15th place after posting rounds of 72, 73 and 71. His three-over 216 total was his lowest tournament total since February 2005. It was the fifth career top-20 finish for the senior from Haddington, Scotland.
Freshman John Kostis tied for 62nd place at 227 (+14) after carding rounds of 77, 72 and 78. Teammates Tom Conran and Beck Miller tied for 70the place at 16-over 229.
The Shootout at Angel Park was hosted by the University of Hawaii. Angel Parkˇ?s Mountain Course is a par-71, 6,722-yard layout. The Arizona varsity will next be in action on Oct. 9-10, when the club travels to Reno, Nev., to participate in the Wolfpack Classic.
